The New Testament Challenge - background
In August of 2006, The General Council of the United Church of Canada gathered for its triennial meeting in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The following resolution (which originated at our church!) was adopted: "...to encourage our membership (ministry and lay) and adherents... to re-acquaint ourselves with the primary written source of our faith by making a commitment to personally and prayerfully read through the entire New Testament once a year over the next three years, opening ourselves to the Spirit of God to speak to us afresh through the written witness to Christ as to how we might live out Christ's message in our lives today."
The United Church of Canada suggests you read the bible every day so you may
- know the Bible is foundational to Christian faith
- become more familiar with the New Testament
- develop the spiritual practice of reading scripture
- become attentive to ways God speaks to your own life through scripture
