The "Sisters in Grace" (Women's Friendship and Bible Study)
What do you get when you combine Bible Study with... ladies of all ages and various churches ? laughter ? opportunity for spiritual growth ? delicious food ? a sense of belonging ? encouragement ? caring babysitting ? You get the "Sisters in Grace!" Every Thursday from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. during the school year, women of all ages gather together in the Church Lounge. We use study guides to help us study various topics in the Bible (such as Forgiveness, The Holy Spirit, Prayer) or Books of the Bible (such as John, Ecclesiastes, Philippians). This group provides an opportunity to grow in the grace and knowledge of God and equips women through support and encouragement to put their faith into action in all areas of their lives. It is also a great opportunity to make and deepen friendships. We open with music, and we close with refreshments in the kitchen... Come and join us! Any questions? Call Bev Squires at 905-862-0529.
The "BOBs" (Men's Bible Study)
In the fall of 2000, several men approached Pastor Alan about starting a Men's Bible Study. Since then, several men meet weekly in the Church Lounge on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. during the school year to learn, share and have a good time! The Men's Bible Study has helped the men to gain a better understanding of the Bible (the first study was on John's Gospel), to grow in prayer, and to develop friendships with one another. So what does BOB stand for? Answer = Boys of the Book! To find out more, call Doug Alexander at 905-852-7794 or Bob Kirvan at 905-852-9176.
"UCW" (United Church Women)
The names have changed over the years - we have been the "Women's Missionary Society" and "The Ladies' Aid" among others - but the fact remains that throughout our history, women in the church have always gathered to serve in Jesus' name with our unique talents and considerable abilities when we join together in a common purpose. The purpose of the U.C.W. is "to unite all women of the congregation for the total mission of the church and provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, service, and fellowship."
Women of all ages are invited to either of the two monthly meetings (September, October, November, February, March, April, May) which meet in the Rev. James A. Mills Chapel:
The Afternoon Unit meets the first Thursday of each month at 2 p.m.
The Evening Unit meets the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
We have three joint potluck supper/meetings each year (December, January, and June), and we often invite the women of other United churches in the area, such as Epsom, Utica, Zephyr, and Stouffville, to join us.
Each meeting includes Business, Worship and a Program. The program might be a local speaker on a topic of general interest or a video on a topic of worldwide significance. It is always something new and interesting! We also plan ways to serve our church family and the community, including hospitality, rummage sales, the annual Tour of Homes, and much more... Each meeting concludes with fellowship and refreshments - UCW is a great place to make new acquaintances and deepen friendships.
We have supported the following ministries and services for many years - if the words are red, you may click on them to visit the official website for more information...
The Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada partners with local aid agencies all over Canada and the world to promote peace, justice, health, and well being for all. Trinity United Church annually commits 10% or more of the total church budget to M&S, and UCW helps insure that we meet that commitment.
Trinity United Church: UCW stands ready to help the church meet all of its budget commitments each year. UCW also meets special needs as they arise, such as a new dishwasher in the kitchen; flowers and plants indoors and out; the roof fund; books for the library; and sponsoring young people in our congregation to attend camp or short-term mission trips.
Camp Big Canoe and Lake Scugog Camp, two United Church camps not far from Uxbridge.
Christian Blind Mission, a ministry committed to saving sight and saving lives all around the world.
The Fred Victor Centre in Toronto, which offers community services, housing options and advocacy for adults experiencing homelessness, marginalization, and poverty.
Grandmothers to Grandmothers, which supports the Stephen Lewis Foundation's initiative to assist grandmothers in Africa who are raising their grandchildren and others who have been orphaned by the AIDS epidemic.
The Healing Fund, the United Church initiative to assist the healing process for those aboriginal Canadians who were harmed by their experience in Canada's residential school system.
The Massey Centre in Toronto, which offers housing and resources to pregnant teens, young single mothers, and their babies.
North House, which facilitates responsive approaches and supports to individuals and families who are facing housing and other challenges in the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge.
Sleeping Children Around the World provides bedkits to children consisting of such items as a mat or mattress, pillow, sheet, blanket, mosquito net (if applicable), clothes outfit, towel and school supplies - the contents vary from country to country depending upon local needs. Some local Uxbridge women have traveled abroad to personally deliver these bedkits...
Sunrise, a local Uxbridge agency which assists young mothers and their babies with a range of free services, including parenting classes, cooking classes, support groups, a clothes closet, and transportation.
Working Group on Refugee Resettlement (WGRR), now known as AURA- Anglican United Refugee Alliance. This agency challenges and enables church congregations to actively support refugee sponsorship and resettlement.
SUPPLY AND SOCIAL ASSISTANCE - We also participate in several joint efforts in which everyone in the church can help:
Visitation - along with our ministers, our UCW plays an active role in visiting shut-ins, those in the hospital, and those in nursing homes. We send cards and make over 60 visits each month...
Food Bank - dry and canned items can always be dropped off in an apple basket near the entrance to the gym to be forwarded to the local food bank.
Collect used stamps - money raised by Presbytery from these stamps assists in the treatment of leprosy in Canada and overseas.
Collect pop tops - these go toward the construction of wheel chairs for the disabled.
Save Zehr's tapes and Campbell's Soup labels (please include the bar code and soup name) - this helps provide resources for local Uxbridge schools plus aid to a school for the deaf in Puerto Rico.
Collect discarded eyeglasses - these are sent to an agency which provides eye care in third world countries.
Bring these items to the church where you will find labeled bins for them in the side foyer (the entrance a few steps north of the church office entrance).
